One Hot Summer of Fishing

My how time flies the fourth is coming up and the summer is going by fast. The lake is dropping with the demand for power and no rain to keep the level up. Fishing is not as bad as it was some good reports coming in on top water action for bass. One striper caught on top water plug while fishing for bass that weighed 40 pounds. While fishing for bass the angler said he first thought it was a bass then the fight was on taking him out over deep water trying to wear the fish out. What a catch on a Zara Spook and all on a top water bait no better way to catch a huge fish.

It seems that if you are on the water early and throw top water you can find some action before the sun get up over the trees. With the pulling water the main river area all up and down the lake offers more activity. The pulling of water down through the river keeps the bait fish active and keeps the water a little cooler. Check times of generation at the dam on Martin and you can tell when the best times would be to fish that river area. Night fishing is better also when the water is being pulled through the dam.

For those that are saying what is a Zara Spook? The Zara Spook a top water bait four inches in length that has no action once it is thrown. You have to put the action into the bait by jerking your rod tip down and to the side. You try to get a certain jerking action going so that the bait moves from side to side. A good Spook fisherman can do tricks with this bait even making it move around objects and change directions as it moves from side to side. Some have rattles inside them and some don’t but either will catch bass and stripers.

This bait seems to bring fish up to the surface from deep water with its action and will tend to catch larger bass than normal. Spooks are hard and tiring to fish as you have to really have a good arm to work them correctly on the water. Once you get the action down then the catching begins. Like all baits you can work hard some morning and not get a rise but at other times the action can be hard and furious.

Look for the fishing to slow some as the traffic builds on the water over the fourth week but then the lake will settle down and the fish will get back on their patterns for the summer. Remember safety on the water and have a great fourth. Till next week I’ve gone early to fish.
